House Bill 422 provides stipends and funding for teaching residents as follows: SECTION 1 amends Public School code in Teacher Residency Program Component in Subsection H to change the stipend from no less than $35,000 per year to no less than 80 percent of the minimum salary for level 1 teachers for the school year and adds that the stipend include “the employer contribution for the teaching resident’s health insurance through the public school insurance authority. Subsections L and M are added: L. $4,000 for each faculty person at a participating public post-secondary educational institution or tribal college who provides co-teaching training to residents and public school mentors; M. $500 for each participating public post-secondary educational institution or tribal college for each student who is a teaching resident to offset institutional costs associated with supervision of teaching residents;Current Law:
House Bill 422 addresses the teaching resident stipend in Section 22-10B-4 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 2020, Chapter 25, Section 4, as amended), which is currently $35,000 per year with no health insurance benefit.
