Legislation Overview:
 Senate Bill 136 (SB 136) adds a new section of Public School Code and provides an appropriation as follows:
SECTION 1 adds a new section of the Public School Code to create the Firearm Detection Software Fund (Fund) and provide grants to public schools.
A. The FunD is created as a nonreverting fund in the state treasury, from the usual financial sources. The Public Education Department (PED) shall administer the Fund with expenditures in the usual way.
B. Money in the Fund is subject to appropriation by the legislature to provide grants to school districts and charter schools to contract for firearm detection software that meets the specified criteria.
C. Subject to the availability of money in the Fund, all school districts and charter schools shall be eligible for grants. 
SECTION 2 makes an appropriation of $5,000,000 from the General Fund to the Fund for expenditure in Fiscal Year 2026 and subsequent fiscal years to provide grants to school districts and charter schools in accordance with the provisions of the Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of a fiscal year shall not revert to the General Fund.
