Summary:
House Bill 98 (HB 98): This legislation is designed to protect the privacy and future opportunities of individuals who have been evicted, by ensuring their eviction record does not permanently affect their ability to secure housing after a reasonable period of time.
Legislation Overview:
House Bill 98 (HB 98): This act proposes to amend the Uniform Owner-Resident Relations Act with a specific focus on the expungement of eviction records.
1.	Automatic Expungement of Eviction Records (Section A):
a)	This part of the act mandates the automatic deletion of public eviction records five years after the eviction date. This process includes the destruction of these records, implying they will be completely removed from public access and databases managed by state or local agencies.
2.	Verification and Expedited Expungement Procedure (Section B):
a)	The administrative office of the courts is tasked with creating a procedure that allows individuals to check if their eviction records have been automatically expunged. It also provides a means to request an expedited expungement for those who find their records still intact past the five-year mark.
3.	Confidentiality of Expungement Requests (Section C):
a)	Requests for expungement are to be kept confidential and not disclosed, ensuring the privacy of individuals seeking to verify or expedite the deletion of their eviction records.
